Pitbulls have been surrounded by controversy and subjected to numerous myths, particularly regarding their strength. They are frequently labeled as aggressive and vicious, with claims of their bites being so powerful.

In this article, we will explore a Pitbull's bite, debunking misconceptions and shedding light on the truth.

How Strong Is a Pitbull's Bite Force?

You might have seen in other articles that a pitbull's bite is 235 pounds per square inch (psi). Psi is an approximation of the pressure of a dog’s bite when the dog closes their mouth on something. ( This was an experiment done by National Geographic ).

Unfortunately, this is an inaccurate way of testing because the dogs that are being tested and measured don't know what they are biting on and don't exert as much force as they truly can. Due to this, there isn't an exact answer to how hard they bite force is in numbers.

However, we can say that depending on the size and fitness of the pitbull they can very well give you a fractured or even a broken arm if they latch on long enough.

Factors Affecting a Pitbull's Bite Force

As mentioned above there isn't an exact answer as to how strong a pitbull's bite truly is since there are so many factors that come to play. Below are listed the top two affecting factors that can affect a pitbulls bite force.

Pitbull's Size and Weight

A pitbull's size and weight are usually equivalent to how strong its bite would be. The larger he or she is the more force they will have when they bite down.

  • Pitbull's Jaw Size

This probably is not coming as a surprise but the size and shape of a dog's skull and jaws are correlated with their bite strength. Pitbulls have large and wide-shaped jaws ranging on average 4-6 inches giving their bites more strength compared to other dogs their size.

Debunking Pitbull Bite Myths

Now that we have a better understanding of a Pitbull's bite force, and how strong it might be let's debunk some common myths about their bites. ( and no a pitbull's bite can not kill you ).

Myth 1: They Have Locking Jaws

Pitbulls do not have locking jaws, that's a common misconception that people have. Pitbulls and other similar breeds have a trait not to let go of anything which has been labeled as "Locking Jaws". Fortunately, there is no such thing and they just lock on as that's their instinct.

Myth 2: They Have the Strongest Bite

As mentioned above a bite mainly depends on the size of the dog and its jaw structure. Pitbulls are large but nowhere near the size of larger dog breeds. Don't get me wrong their bites are still extremely powerful however, they do not have the strongest bites.

Myth 3: They Are More Likely to Bite

Pitbulls are not inherently more likely to bite than other dog breeds. It has been going around most likely due to their looks that the likelihood of a pitbull biting or even being more dangerous than other breeds is true. However, that is false it truly depends on various factors, such as individuality, training, and the situation that is happening.

The Bottom Line

While we can't exactly measure the bite force of a pitbull we can say that they do have a powerful bite.

The strength of a Pitbull's bite is significant but not extraordinary compared to other breeds. Unfortunately, we can't give an exact estimate of how powerful it truly is since there isn't an accurate way to test it. However, we can say that their bites can fracture you and even potentially break your bones.
